Embracing the Unpredictable: A Photoshoot with Maria and Her Horses

We’ve all been there—planning something special, and then the weather decides to do its own thing. It’s tempting to think, “Maybe I should cancel.” But what if I told you that unpredictable weather can add something magical to your photos?

That’s exactly what happened during my recent session with Maria and her horses. We had light rain, moody clouds, and just enough sun to keep us guessing. But instead of letting the weather hold us back, we leaned into it — and the results were stunning.

Capturing a Moment in Time

This year, Maria had a clear vision for her photo shoot: she wanted to capture her foal, born earlier in the year, and get some long-overdue riding pictures with her mare, Bambi. The goal was to create a set of photos that felt both authentic and natural.

As we began, the weather was classic “can’t make up its mind” — cloudy one minute, sunny the next. For a while, it seemed like the rain might hold off, but when it did come, it added a special touch to the riding photos. Maria’s calm and confidence with Bambi in the rain gave the images a quiet, rustic feel that fits perfectly with the aesthetic she was after. The soft rain created a beautiful sheen on Bambi’s coat and the way the droplets caught the light made for some truly mesmerizing shots.

Moody Clouds and Unexpected Beauty

Throughout the session, I couldn’t help but appreciate the moody sky above us. When the clouds thickened, they created a dramatic backdrop. The light became softer, and the colors of the landscape felt richer. There’s something about the mix of moody clouds and a well-timed break in the weather that can turn a regular shoot into something extraordinary.

One of my favorite moments came when the sun suddenly broke through the clouds, casting a warm glow over Maria and Bambi as they paused in the field. It was as if nature itself was giving us the perfect stage. It’s these unpredictable moments that I love most in my work—the ones you couldn’t plan for but end up being the highlight of the day.

Trusting the Process: Rain or Shine

I always tell my clients, “You can’t control the weather, but you can control how you work with it.” That’s something I’ve learned over the years—there’s no such thing as bad weather, only different opportunities. Whether it’s moody clouds, light rain, or full sun, there’s always a way to make the most of it.

Maria trusted the process, and together we created photos that were not only true to her vision but elevated by the natural elements around us. Sure, rescheduling is always an option, but sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect them.

If you’re planning a session and wondering whether the weather will cooperate, don’t worry. Trust me—we’ll make magic with whatever the day brings. If you’re ready to embrace the unexpected and capture something truly unique, let’s book your session and see what nature has in store for us!
